The Story Behind The Stack:

Bea's Story

Back to articles

At A&M, we believe every stack tells a story. In this edition of The Story Behind The Stack, we had the pleasure of stepping into the studio with singer-songwriter Bea to chat sound, style, and self-expression.

Through Bea's stack, it becomes clear that she uses her ears for far more than just listening to and making music. From go-to hoops to chic, everyday studs, her stack is an extension of her personality as an artist, a place where she explores her identity, and a look that is entirely her own.

01. Tell us about you

I’m Bea, I’m a singer and a songwriter. Most of my songs start out as messy little poems in my notebook, based around a word or a phrase I see or hear, that eventually turn into something bigger. Recently one of my songs was featured in the show Off Campus, which has been a bit insane, and it’s opened up this whole new chapter for me and my music. In three words, I'd describe my ear stack as elegant, sparkly, and chic.

02. I get a new piercing when…

I’m having either an identity crisis, an early-life crisis, or I just don’t really know what I’m doing anymore. Getting a new piercing makes me feel a bit badass. It reminds me I’m still brave deep down, the same way jumping into the sea does (for context, I’m terrified of the sea!)

03. The piece I never take off is…

A simple hoop. It goes with everything and anything, it sits nicely, and it isn’t too in-your-face. She’s demure, if you know what I mean.

In general, I think my stack says I'm someone who likes to sparkle and likes to have a good time - a mix of playful and classic with a bit of a punch ha!

04. The piece in my stack with the biggest ego is…

The fish piercing stud. It’s the only motif in my stack so, as you can imagine, it feels pretty proud to have made it. I’m also a Pisces, so maybe there’s a bit of ego in that too.

05. My music process is…

I start from poetry. I write a lot of poetry and find myself focusing on a particular word that I’ve seen or heard or think there's more to. Then I’ll take that one interesting word and just keep rhyming and writing around it until a story and a message reveal themselves to me. I end up with a lot of random poems in my notes, and eventually real meaning shines through.

06. Do you think your music process relates to your stacking process?

Yeah, definitely. Writing songs feels like a puzzle, and stacking my ears is kind of the same. You’re putting different pieces together, seeing what works proportion-wise and style-wise, and sometimes the most unexpected combinations end up being the best. But it doesn’t always work the first time. You often have to step away, come back with fresh ears or fresh eyes, and be honest when something isn’t quite right yet. I do that both with songs and with my stack. It takes a bit of time to get it to that place where everything finally clicks.

07. Something I’ll never outgrow…

A really classic stud earring. Like, I can imagine my mum wearing them and it looking very chic. I think I’d like to wear more studs actually - I'll work on that.

08. The chapter I’m in right now is called…

I think I would call this my Off Campus chapter because they used my song 'Rich' in Episode 1, which is the coolest thing ever! There’s been lots of new people finding my music. Like, my monthly listeners have increased by around two million, which is insane.

09. My advice for someone starting their ear stack curation…

Start small, don’t go too big too soon. Less is more (I probably would have said more is more a year ago, but I'd say less is more now). And don’t let anyone else’s opinion influence yours - you do you.

10. What does 'Stacking Loudly' mean to you?

To me, Stacking Loudly means stacking your earrings without caring about anyone else’s opinion. It doesn’t have to mean massive hoops - it’s about wearing what makes you feel totally comfortable, super confident, and authentically yourself.
