Shine Bright Like An (Ethical) Diamond

Lab Grown Diamonds

CVD diamonds – Chemical Vapor Deposition. We are using CVD – these take 4 - 10 weeks to be grown in labs

It is one of the most sustainable materials in the luxury market!

Caring for lab grown diamonds is the same as any type of diamond.

How are CVD (Chemical Vapor Deposition) Diamonds made?

CVD (Chemical Vapor Deposition) diamonds are man made diamonds, created under controlled laboratory conditions (they need a lot of TLC). These synthetic diamonds have essentially the same chemical composition, crystal structure and as much, if not more sparkle than mined-diamonds.

  1. CVD is a technique by which diamonds can be grown from a hydrocarbon gas mixture. In this process, a thin slice of diamond seed (often an HPHT produced diamond) is placed in a sealed chamber and heated to around 800 degrees celsius.
  2. The chamber is then filled with a carbon rich gas (usually methane) along with other gases. Then, the gases are ionised into plasma.
  3. The ionisation breaks the molecular bonds in the gases causing the pure carbon to adhere to the diamond seed. This slowly builds up into a crystal, atom by atom, layer by layer. Creating the diamonds that are found in our Diamond Collection, pretty cool. This whole process takes from 4 - 10 weeks.

How to Care for Lab Created Diamonds

While diamonds are one of the strongest and most durable substances on Earth, they do need a little maintenance to keep them as bright and beautiful as possible and lab grown diamonds are no exception.

Prevention and storage is always a good start. Store in the box you received the jewellery or, a ziplock bag without any other jewellery to prevent scratches or dents.

We would not advise wearing while swimming and avoiding perfumes, moisturisers, oils, etc while wearing the jewellery as this can cause the plating to wear away over time.

Cleaning a lab grown diamond is very simple. Take a clean cloth and wipe down gently or if you were after a more in depth clean, softly wipe or brush the diamond with a wet cloth or soft bristled toothbrush.

Ethics and Sustainability Surrounding Diamonds

There are a number of ethical and environmental issues surrounding the mining of natural diamonds.

Due to natural diamonds being between 2-5miles below the earth’s surface, machinery has to use millions of litres of diesel and dig up hundreds of tonnes of earth in order to bring the diamonds all the way to the surface. In fact, for a single carat of diamond, approximately 250 tonnes of earth has to be dug up, 2011 ounces of air pollution is released and 143 pounds of CO2 is emitted. Therefore natural diamonds are contributing to issues such as global warming, deforestation and soil erosion. The carbon footprint of Lab grown diamonds is around 5-10% of mined diamonds.

Not all mined diamonds are done in an ethical way and are hard to trace. However, reputable companies will have certification to show how the mined diamonds are produced.

FAQ's

While lab grown diamonds are made within a lab rather than deep within the earth's crust — they are still 100% “real” diamonds. In terms of the chemical and physical properties, there is no difference between lab grown diamonds and mined-diamonds.

Lab grown diamonds and mined diamonds have the exact same physical properties. On the other hand, a cubic zirconia is not a diamond. In fact, a cubic zirconia contains zero carbon, whereas diamonds (mined and lab-grown) are made entirely from carbon.

Although grown by scientists instead of created in the earth's crust, lab diamonds are absolutely real diamonds—they display the same chemical and optical properties as natural diamonds and therefore are as strong as mined diamonds.

Lab grown diamonds usually cost about 30% less than natural diamonds of comparable size and quality. But these diamonds are every bit as luxurious as their natural counterparts, since their dazzling beauty and durability are exactly the same. The reason lab grown diamonds cost less is because they are passed through less hands. Just from the lab onto the retailer.

In order to identify a mined diamond from a lab grown diamond, you need to use specialised equipment. The nature of inclusions in a mined diamond differs from the types of inclusions found in a lab grown diamonds. Not all inclusions are easily visible through the naked eye.

A lab grown diamond is forever. A lab grown diamond has the same physical and optical properties of a mined diamond. It will not change colour. It will not change appearance. It will look exactly the same in a hundred years as it does the day you receive it.
