Always on the lookout for young new talent, London based jewellery designer Astrid & Miyu has launched a brand new initiative, the Design Project. The first of two new projects with Central Saint Martins students and aspiring designers has been created by Matilde Monzzanega. The collection includes 3 beautifully versatile earring designs in different lengths, inspired by the movement of the cherry blossom.

“Maiochiru” is a Japanese word which means to fall as if dancing. The inspiration for the range came from a manga film entitled ‘Five centimetres per second’ which follows two lovers during the season of the cherry blossom. The film title indicates the length of time it takes from the cherry blossom petal to fall to the ground from the tree. The beauty, poetry and delicacy which dwell within the cherry tree are the inspiration behind this elegant collection. Astrid & Miyu's most versatile range yet, the earrings come in different lengths and can be worn in multiple ways across the ear via the different earring lengths and hoop design. As with all Astrid & Miyu products, they can be stacked up with ear cuffs and pulled through different piercings in your ear to create a completely different look each time they are worn. Specifically, the peculiarity of the earrings swells within the movement of the pieces as they are worn and catch the light.

The Design Project.

Matilde, the 22 year old designer behind her first ever collection with Astrid & Miyu is currently in her final year of jewellery design at Central Saint Martins and also works across Astrid & Miyu’s two central London stores to gain more experience within the jewellery industry. She explains that, “I have been passionate about jewellery design since I can remember and have always dreamt about studying and pursuing a career within the industry. The opportunity at Astrid & Miyu has allowed me to live out my passion. Having had the chance to design my first ever commercial collection has allowed me to focus on a whole theme and see all of this inspiration come to life.”

Dedicated to investing in new talent, Astrid & Miyu’s Founder Connie Nam decided to create the Design Project. “Whilst living in London for the last 9 years working with various creatives I've always been impressed by how much creative talent there is in the city, and how brands aren’t taking advantage of this. I came across Matilde Mozzanega and Rebecka Arneberg, both final year students at Saint Martins, looked at their portfolio and decided to work with them to launch the first collections for the Design Project. I am planning on launching one collection a year with design students going forward to support young design talent and also get inspired by their fresh perspectives!” Matilde’s designs, the Maiochiru Collection, will be launching this month, and Rebecka’s designs will be launching in August.”
